Customs and traditions

In Canada, I could see lot of different customs... I'm going you tell some:

  • Sugaring of

At the beginning of the spring, the Canadians collect the maple syrup… mmmmh! Yum!!! This is a hard work, but after, the children are very happy to have maple syrup lollipops!! And this collection announces the spring, the heat…! The maple’s sap runs of the trees, and they harvest it with the straws, the buckets… But now, the maple syrup’s collection is industrial, and the Canadians don’t need any more collecting the syrup with the traditions. But they use to walk in the woods during this time, and they don’t forget to visit the sap house!!! For know where there are this hut, http://www.cabaneasucre.org/ (but it’s in French…)

  • The Charivari

The charivari is a customs funny, for some, and less, for others… The tradition of the Charivari is, when two bridegrooms have a big difference between their ages, or one of them is widowed or widow and he looks too in a rush to be married a other time, during the wedding night, the neighbours come in front of the bridegrooms’ house, and they do lot of noises, they do music and they can dancing.

  • The Work Bee:

It’s a very old tradition. It dates on the Middle Age! This custom involves that the members of families of the same value are called to give their time and their work for weed, saw some wood, help in the harvests, make butcher's shop and prepare cans of food. The work bee is very necessary when the disease or the death strikes a family.

  • Corn Husking Party:

I’m very lucky, because I could participate to this tradition. We put one pile of corn in front of the men, and an other in front of women. In those piles, there is one red corn. The woman who draws it, and the man who draws the others must kiss themselves and open the ball. It’s funny, but I was very eased to not draw the red corn!!! :)

  • Church auction (La criée des âmes)

Usually, every Sundays of November after the All Saints Day, there is the “criée”. It’s an auction, which pay for the Church, and the church where it takes place. After the high mass, the parishioners collect on the square of the Church or take refuge inside when the auction occurs later in winter. We take advantage of it then to serve dishes got ready by the women of the village. Afterward, the town crier announces aloud objects and farm produces brought by auction. He shows his talent to lead the crowds by assuring the biggest participation of all.
